How I accidentally (on purpose) was an extra in World War Z and was *this* close to Brad Pitt

If you knew me before I moved to Glasgow this story will come as no surprise to you. If you don't know me I'm not quite sure how to explain it but sometimes things just happen.  I don't set out to do something but find myself in a situation and just go for it if that makes sense. That's what happened to me today on George Square.

George Square is smack dab in the centre of Glasgow and has been taken over and turned into Philadelphia for filming of Brad Pitt's new zombie flick "World War Z." It's all any and everyone in Glasgow can talk about and I decided to take a look after I had a meeting in town today. Street lights were replaced with American traffic lights, familiar green interstate signs were put up and there were even American buses, taxes and hot dog carts. It was cool seeing a little bit of home in my new home and listening to little old ladies chat about what was going on as they took photos on their old school film cameras.

I heard lots of load bangs and saw extras running and well if I'm honest that was all you could see. I'd had my fill and since filming was diverting the buses around the Square I decided to try and get a train home. I walked down along one side and was told I had to wait to cross the street. Now I could have walked back and down another street, but I waited a few minutes and this is how I accidentally (on purpose) snuck onto the World War Z set.

I say accidentally because I honestly was just walking where security told me to go to get to my destination. I say on purpose because once I realized I'd made it behind the barriers I didn't turn around and walk away. I ended up in a crowd of extras and told the two guys next to me I wasn't an extra but maybe I'd stick around. They gave me a once over for any "labels" and then pushed me ahead of them to get in the shot. 

I ran down George Street with maybe another fifty extras several times. We'd run and go back, run and go back. These extras were REALLY taking it seriously; I got pushed and shoved and fake American cops guided us away from what I can only guess were zombies that will be added in later. IT WAS AWESOME.

I'm not going to lie here; I submitted an application to the casting company to be an extra. I even got an email back asking me to come down for the casting, but we were in France. I was gutted. I'd only had the opportunity to audition to be an extra once before for Milk Money when I was 13; I also was out of town for those auditions. So that I randomly found myself as an extra for thirty minutes was pretty freaking cool.

When we were running I noticed there was a car off to the side with what I thought was Brad Pitt's stunt double in it. As the wranglers yelled for everyone to move onto George Square I hung back to try and make my escape and then it happened. The car door opened and real life, honest to goodness, sexiest man alive himself BRAD PITT stepped out of the car. He looked smaller than I imagined and his nose looked really delicate. Don't ask me why I noticed his nose but it was definitely more refined than rugged. He looked hot, but also a bit old. I hate saying that but he definitely had crinkled eyes. Brad Pitt was close enough for me to lunge over and hug him before being dragged off to jail. I knew what I had to do.

I needed to head home anyway so I had nothing to lose and I took out my iPhone and snapped a picture. Quicker than you can say "3G iPhone cameras suck" a producer-type said to me "When you're an extra you're not supposed to do that."  I mumbled back "well it's good I'm not an extra then" and wandered away up the street where I asked if they'd let me walk up to get my bus.  My thirty minutes of fame were over.

So you see I didn't try to crash a movie set but I did. There is every chance you might see a blonde girl with a grey sweater dress, black leggings, black boots and a purple bag running to escape zombies as Brad Pitt does who knows what in a car. You could scoff at me and say I messed up shooting, but really all I did was have a fucking awesome thirty minutes where I wasn't a Mom. I got to be the risk-taking, fun loving girl I was back in the day and it was AWESOME. I doubt I messed up their shots and there will be at least one more person going to see the film now that wasn't before to try and see if I spy my fat ass running away from invisible zombies.

The Proposal

On Tuesday, NBH bit the bullet and was a great husband by going to see a sneak preview of "The Proposal" with me. We turned it into a date night with a buy-one-get-one-free coupon I had for Pizza Express, too.

This movie is pretty much exactly what you'd expect it to be, so instead of writing out a review here are my top 3 reasons to see the movie:

1) Kevin, the puppy

2) Ryan Reynolds topless

3) Betty White is hilarious

The Hangover

On Wednesday, NBH and I had my favorite kind of date night, which meant dinner and a free preview courtesy of SeeFilmFirst. We went to TGIFriday's (don't laugh it tastes the same as home) and then saw "The Hangover."

Three best friends and a brother-in-law to be take a road trip to Vegas for Doug's Bachelor Party. When they all wake up the next day they can't remember anything and they can't find Doug. The movie is basically them trying to piece together what happened and find Doug and get back to LA for his wedding; as you can imagine it's not an easy task, but a funny one.

It's pretty funny, with Zack Galifianakis stealing the show and the socially inept brother-in-law. Bradley Cooper does the "hot" asshole friend pretty much as you'd expect him to do and Ed Helms from the Daily Show puts in a good performance as the p*ssywhipped dentist.

I won't post the trailer because I think they spoil the best parts. All and all it's like if SuperBad and Old School had a baby and that baby was a movie. I would have happily had paid to see it, but I won't be rushing to buy it on DVD when it's released.

I Love You Man

How appropriate was it that I went to see a free preview of "I Love You Man" on my main squeeze Paul Rudd's birthday? I've been crushing on Paul since 1995 and Clueless. If you are ever feeling down, just pop in Clueless and skip to the part where Cher realizes "I love Josh" and there is a montage and he looks over at her in the car and smiles...aaah. Okay but I digress.

"I Love You Man" is about Peter who after proposing to his girlfriend goes on a series of "man dates" to find a best man since he doesn't have any close male friends. Now I realize that sounds like the worst premise ever, but I swear it is not.



Firstly you have Paul Rudd who is hilarious and adorable all at the same time, Jason Seagal who is super funny and I have a mini-crush on, too (I actually vaguely remember thinking he was cute in Freaks and Geeks). Throw in Jaime Pressly, Jon Favreau, Lou Ferigno (yes, the Hulk) and a host of other players from some of the funniest tv shows (Flight of the Conchords, SNL, The Office, Reno 911 etc.) and you've got a great cast. It also has this guy:




Normally I'd share the trailer or some funny jokes, but I think the trailer sorta spoils some of the jokes. This is one of the first movies I've laughed out loud to in a while and it's not gross or degrading humor, it's just genuinely funny. We will definitely be getting this on DVD when it comes out.

The Boat that Rocked

Last night we went to see a free sneak preview of "The Boat that Rocked." The first thing you have to say is that it has an amazing soundtrack, but would really expect anything less from a movie about a pirate radio station in 1966?

The plot is pretty simple. Rock Radio is a pirate station which operates from a boat in the North Sea and the government wants to shut it and other pirate stations down. The main character is a young Carl who's mom ships him out to the boat which is run by his godfather.

It's pretty much what you'd expect, sex, drugs and rock n roll. That being said it is cute and funny. My favorite person being Angus, played by Rhys Darby who plays Murray on Flight of the Conchords.

Maybe it's the New Zealand accent, maybe it's because I love Murry, but I found him the funniest. If you don't know Murray, just watch this.

As always I won't give too much away, because I hate spoilers. I did find it interesting that fat, hairy men had women falling all over them just because they were radio DJs. I've never thought Rhys Ifans was attractive, but man his voice is sexy in this movie.

That being said there is some eyecandy for the ladies. I still haven't decided if Carl was cute or not, but Mark woa, yes!

I have a thing for leather pants, what can I say? Unfortunately for y'all in the states, it doesn't come out until August 28th! So that's quite a wait, but it's well worth it.

Movie Bad Ass Brackets

I'm writing up speakers notes as I've been asked last minute to open a conference on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome tomorrow-- yikes! So while I come up with 15 minutes on FAS, why don't you pop over to my friend George's blog and vote for the Biggest Movie Bad Ass of all time.

Much to NBH's dismay, I watched my favorite 1980's movie in bed last night and it could be yours if you are lucky!

Bride Wars

Tonight I went to see a free sneak preview of "Bride Wars" with my Mother-in-law. It stars Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway as childhood best friends who've always dreamed of getting married. Their boyfriends propose within days of each other and they both choose the same wedding planner who accidentally books their weddings on the same day. When neither chooses to move their date, the war, so to speak, begins.

The movie was definitely cute and there were some laugh out loud funny spots (mostly from supporting characters). Personally I found it hard to believe that Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway were best friends, they had no chemistry. It could also be that because Kate Hudson isn't going to be winning an Oscar anytime soon if you catch my drift.

I'd recommend paying for a matinee ticket rather than full-price and I won't be adding it to my DVD rotation. I'll leave you with the preview, which has some minor spoilers and also contains a lot of stuff that isn't even in the movie- weird! If you go to see it, my favorite line from the movie was about butter. I won't reveal anymore :)

Four Christmases

Last night I went and saw the movie "Four Christmases" with my friend Deb and my mother-in-law. While I wouldn't ask for my money back, I wouldn't recommend it as a must see. If you see it on DVD in a few months, then go for it.

It is fairly predictable and while I love me some Vince Vaughn (Brad), he and Reese Witherspoon (Kate) have absolutely NO chemistry. There are lots of rumors going around about how much they hate each other in real life, well it definitely shows. Vaughn is pretty funny, but some things just don't make sense.

Both of their families have thick southern accents, yet they live in San Francisco. Okay so maybe they moved, but both sets of parents and their siblings partners have an accent, too. It just irked me. Tim McGraw plays one of Brad's brothers and I had no idea until I saw the credits. It was a very odd cameo. Dwight Yoakam was in it as well, so there must be a country music connection somewhere. Kristin Chenoweth plays Kate's sister and I love her, but she was under utilized and could have been any actress. Sue from "Swingers" is there, too as Brad's Mom's boyfriend, but he looks old and fat which makes me sad.

I did laugh and I had a good night, but I won't be buying this when it's out on DVD to put into my night-time DVD rotation even though I love the sound of Vince Vaughn's voice.

Zack and Miri

Last night we went to see the new Kevin Smith movie "Zack and Miri Make a Porno." NBH and I are both big Kevin Smith fans and come to think of it have probably also seen every movie Seth Rogen has been in. It was pretty funny, but like most of Smith's recent movies, it starts out hilarious and then sort of falls apart at the end. I'd still recommend seeing it if you are a fan of Smith's films or Rogen's for that matter. Plus Jason Mewes is still hilarious as someone that is not Jay.
Now NBH and I both have an issue with the last few Kevin Smith flicks and it's name is Jennifer Schwallbach-- his wife. I guess she's an actress, but as far as I can tell she's only ever been in his movies. He always casts her as a hottie and well not only can she not act, she's not attractive. My latest bone of contention is they have her playing a 28 year old in this movie. Sure it's only briefly, but come on she's 37 and an old 37 at that. At least her hair isn't blonde anymore.

Anyway, its a good movie and it makes me slightly upset I'm missing my 10 year HS reunion that takes place Thanksgiving weekend. Although I doubt I'd meet a "Brandon" at mine and that would be my real motivation. Having a graduating class of 70-some doesn't have the same possibilities for interesting partners/guests as one of 800.

So I hate movie trailers because they spoil some of the best parts of films. In my opinion, I'd rather laugh for the first time in the theatre. So here is a VERY NSFW clip of "I'm f***ing Seth Rogen" which basically rips off Sarah Silverman:

Baby Mama

NBH and I went to see a sneak preview of "Baby Mama" last night and it was really funny. Personally I'm a HUGE fan of Amy Poehler and she totally made the movie; there are some really random quotes that you can tell are her ad-libbing. While the beginning drags a bit and it is fairly predictable, I still recommend seeing it if you can!

Seriously?

Shitty no good, yucky day. I got up early this morning and headed into work around 7:40am and on the way I got a flat tire. I had to call NBH to come and put on the spare (luckily I was on the bus route 5 minutes away), drive him home, drive to the garage and get a new tire put on for £40. I also found out our exhaust needs replaced; I can't afford to replace it now because its a long month and I don't get paid until the 31st. The guy patched it though so that should at least make it less noisy. I eventually made it to my office at 9:40am.

Then I got to my alterations/seamstress to get my dress and sort out my bustle. My dress fits amazing now, which is great, I don't hate it anymore. Then I show them the pictures I brought with me of what bustle I wanted. Nothing crazy at all, just simple under bustle done with ribbons. Well they say they've never done one....they only do under bustles with snaps or hooks. Everyone I've ever known with overs have had them break.

So now, I'm going to be calling around seamstresses in Glasgow and Cincinnati and try to get something sorted. It's just one more stress (even if a silly one) I don't need now.

There are two happy things about today:

-It's Emma's 4th Birthday!!! We are having a party for her tomorrow so more about it after.






-Arlene, Katie, Deb, Deb's Mother-in-law and aunt and I saw Mama Mia. I wasn't super impressed but it was fun and silly and I really want to watch Muriel's Wedding now.

I totally associate Abba with Muriel; I love Toni Collette and if you've never seen Muriel's Wedding I enthusiastically recommend it. I will leave you a particularly ABBArific scene:
